Iron ore is the raw material used to make pig iron, which is one of the main raw materials to make steel


Iron ore is one of the biggest dry bulk commodities traded and shipped. With metallurgical coal and manganese, Iron Ore is integral component in blast furnace production.

As the primary raw material in the manufacture of steel, about 98% of iron ore is used to make steel. Construction and infrastructure development, which accounts for almost 50% of the steel consumption, was responsible for the incremental development.

Until recently the market was mostly contract-based, with fixed-price contracts led by the major producers


World iron ore production totaled 1,480 million tons (normalized to 63% Fe) in the year 2007. Although iron ore production is widely spread occurring in almost fifty countries, the bulk of world production came from just five countries. The five largest producers Brazil, Australia, China, India and the former Soviet Union account for almost 80% of the world total. Export of iron ore is dominated by Brazil, Australia and India making up almost 80% of the export market.

The spurt in the Iron ore price is mainly led by the incremental demand for Steel (end product of Iron ore) from emerging markets esp. BRIC countries and China in particular. Construction and infrastructure development, which accounts for almost 50% of the steel consumption, is responsible for the incremental development.

Iron ore Lumps

Lump is iron ore with the majority of individual particles measuring more than 4.75mm diameter. Followed by pellet, lump is the next most desirable ore in terms of blast furnace productivity.


Iron ore Fines

Fines are defined as iron ore with majority of individual particles measuring less than 4.75mm diameter. Unless the Iron ore fines are processed into sinter, it would effectively smother the air flow in the blast furnace.
